Ashley Groundworks recently completed a residential project involving the installation of an ISOQUICK® insulated foundation system for a private customer’s new-build farmhouse in Hampshire.

The choice of an insulated foundation was a deliberate one for the customer – ISOQUICK insulated foundations are cost effective, energy efficient thanks to their ability to minimise heat loss, and reduce moisture. In addition, they provide a robust base for the construction of passive and low energy buildings.

The project was commissioned by Charlton Construction on behalf of the private client who was seeking to replace an existing farmhouse with a modern, energy-efficient home.

The requirements of the insulated raft foundation project included:

  • Installation of a concrete floor slab using the ISOQUICK® insulated foundation system.
  • Drainage installation, sourced from Rouden Pipetek, to support the new dwelling’s infrastructure.

Project overview: Laying the insulated foundation for success

As the groundworks expert on the project, Ashley Groundworks was tasked with the installation of the insulating foundation, as well as auxiliary tasks to ensure the success of the construction project.

This included:

  • Installing the ISOQUICK insulated foundation to support the new farmhouse
  • Excavating and installing drainage to connect to the existing system
  • Overcoming challenges posed by adverse weather and restricted site access

Our approach: a step-by-step process

Our clear, step-by-step process ensured we could complete the installation of the insulating foundation and pipework despite environmental and site access challenges.

We began with preparation and site setup, which included:

  • Reviewing architectural drawings and co-ordinating the plant, labour and materials needed
  • Clearing and levelling the site, and stockpiling the needed materials on site
  • Compacting the base with stone to create a stable platform

Our second step involved the drainage and foundation installation. Specifically, this entailed:

  • Excavating and installing drainage just outside the farmhouse’s perimeter for future connection
  • Preparing the site of the foundation with fine stone, ensuring a level surface for the ISOQUICK insulated raft foundation
  • Collaborating with the ISOQUICK installation team to position and secure the insulated foundation system

The final step included installing the floor slab. This included:

  • Installing a damp-proof membrane (DPM) and reinforcing the foundation with steel mesh
  • Pouring and levelling the concrete, creating a seamless floor ready for wall construction
  • Finalising the project by connecting the drainage system

The results: a high-performance insulated foundation

Our expertise in successfully delivering similar projects, as well as experience of overcoming poor weather conditions and site access challenges ensured this too was a successful project.

  • Deadline met: The project was completed within the agreed schedule enabling the rest of the construction to proceed in a timely fashion.
  • Energy efficiency: The ISOQUICK insulated foundation ensures superior thermal performance, isolating the home from the cold ground and retaining heat effectively.
  • Durability: The concrete floor provides a robust base with significant thermal mass to support the structure and enhance energy efficiency.

The insulated raft foundation ensures long-term sustainability for the property, aligning with modern energy standards for residential buildings.
